CHAPTER 16

April 13, 2003

The rising light at the start of the Vineyard season awakens the soul no matter how dark it’s become.

“Over here!” I squealed, waving my arms at Bobbie as she rolled her bag off the boat.

“You’re a sight for sore eyes,” she laughed while we walked toward my car to head up-island to Chilmark.

“I’m so glad you’re here!” I tapped the steering wheel excitedly on the drive.

She smirked, sticking her hand out the window. “Don’t get all sentimental on me now.”

“Why the hell are you in Chilmark, for the love of God?” I asked as we passed Alley’s General Store and the fairgrounds.

“They have me here until Monday; then it’s back to the log cabin.” She tried hard not to smile, knowing how excited I’d be. Bobbie and a few other nurses had stayed in the log cabin last summer. The hospital rented the huge five-bedroom house with a jacuzzi and pool table right in town.

“No way!” I yelled. “How did you manage that?”

“I asked.” She shrugged, giggling.

“I’m very excited about this.”

“I figured you would be, considering you spent almost every night there last year.”

“Yeah, yeah.” I waved my hand. “How was the boat? I detect the smell of an Offshore.” I leaned over, sniffing.

“Of course I had one. Two, actually, but don’t tell.”

I noticed the redness in her cheeks, confirming the second beer.

“Best part of the boat ride back.” She stared out the window.

“I love coming back. The metal doors close, and the horn blows. I take a sip of my beer, and all’s right with the world,” I said, thinking of how I hadn’t been off the island in a while and had been avoiding it.

I should go and see my mother—shitty daughter.

“You don’t have to sell it to me. That’s why we keep coming back, and you’re here forever, you say.” She danced happily in her seat, then changed the subject. “So, tell me about your guy?”

I was hoping she would forget.

We pulled into the driveway to a little cottage nestled in the woods and went in to check it out. It reminded me of the cottage where I stayed, except she was in the middle of nowhere. I told Bobbie all about Dock, bringing her up to speed. Once I started talking, I couldn’t seem to stop, and the feelings of it all flooded me.

“Maybe he’s in a ditch dead somewhere,” she said, pulling on her shirt, looking in the mirror.

“I doubt it.” I lay back on the bed and swung my legs back and forth, staring at the ceiling. “Maybe he’s just not that into me?”

“You’re crazy,” she said, sitting next to me. “They are all into you. You got that city-edge thing that keeps them wanting more.” She hit me in the leg.

“So, doesn’t he? Maybe it repels against itself.” I laughed. “Whatever. I don’t even want to talk about it. Let’s go have fun.”

“Perfect.” She smiled but regarded me seriously, making sure I was all right.

“I’m fine! Let’s go.”

We headed to Oak Bluffs and made our way around, meeting up with everyone who was out and about.
